"Creative Magic Series"- Featuring Monique Devroeg

"Creative Magic" Featuring Monique Devroeg from "Unique Nique"

I first saw Monique's work through various groups and fell in love with her glass pendants! She also does beautiful crocheted bracelets combining pretty glass beads (  I even have one from her!). Visit her
website and I am sure you will enjoy her creativity and "Unique" jewelry!

"I have been a little out the box since I was a youngster in fact that is where my name for my business comes from Unique is what people referred to me as, I suppose they were being kind and didn’t want to call me weird and Nique is what my Dad called me, so UniqueNique is what I became. It seems I was born with an insatiable curiosity about what happens when…. I love to experiment. I really enjoy most art forms but keep coming back to glass as it is a challenging medium to work in and it is at times rather unforgiving but even your mistakes can make interesting pieces. I am inspired by practically anything, or so my kids would have you believe they constantly want to know how I see something because it seldom is as whatever the item is used for, possibility for change is endless. I love colour and light and shape and form sometimes I like to mimic what I see and at others it is the movement of what I see that inspires, this is one of the reasons I like to work with wire, seed beads and crystals it seems that as you put them together they flow so beautifully that it is almost like they decide where they would look the best.

I was once asked to do a tutorial for my crochet wire bracelets but I have a little difficulty in figuring out whether a tutorial that starts with choose the colours that inspire you and go with the flow would actually help anyone, each bracelet that I have made is different and each seems to take on a character of its own. At some stage though I suppose I will have to behave like a grown up and put my thoughts on paper in the hopes of inspiring others to create.

For me I simply have to create if I don’t my head might explode it is something I need and on some days I need it even more than food and water. I even sleep at night with a sketchpad and pencil by my bed and often wake up with something on it sometimes I can decipher it and other times I can’t but the movement of what I have done seems to inspire more experiments and that is always a good thing. Creativity in others also always sparks an answer in me, some days it could just be the way another artist or artisan saw a butterfly or balloon that makes me look at it all over again and wonder how many other ways it could change. I do all my own d.i.y. so I do try to paint within the lines at times but always something offbeat will turn up whether it is a sprinkle of stars on a wall only seen in the dark or a duvet cover made out of Indian Sari’s life is there to make the most of, and hopefully that is the one thing that I have instilled in my children, to take every opportunity to make the most of their lives. Creating brings peace to my soul and joy to my life and if with my ability I can bring a little beauty and joy into someone else’s life then I have done my job well."
